Hungarian Operations Research Society

Welcome to the Hungarian Operations Research Society

The Hungarian Operations Research Society (HORS) is dedicated to advancing the field of operations research in Hungary by promoting research, education, and collaboration within the community. Our website serves as a hub for sharing essential information about the society, highlighting key events, and offering resources for both researchers and educators in the field of operations research.

A short history of HORS

HORS was founded on May 24, 1991. However, the history of operations research (OR) in Hungary dates back much earlier, to the 1950s. During the communist era (before 1990), it was nearly impossible to establish a scientific society. After the political changes, the door opened for founding scientific societies, including HORS among others. The first president of HORS was Margit Ziermann (1924-1994), and András Prékopa (1929-2016) was elected as the honorary president of HORS. Since its foundation, HORS has been working continuously, and now the third generation of Hungarian OR researchers leads the society.

The main goals of the society:

  • Providing information related to scientific life for the members, maintaining connections with similar domestic and foreign organizations
  • Organizing economic activities to support its operation (events, conferences, etc.)

Activities

Our first OR conference dates back to 1967. Since then, OR conferences have been organised mainly every year. Nowadays, the Hungarian Operations Research Conference, presented in Hungarian, is organised every odd year, while the "VOCAL Optimization Conference: Advanced Algorithms" is an international OR conference organised in even years.

The Hungarian-language journal "Pages in Applied Mathematics" was founded in 1975 and regularly publishes articles related to HORS. Szigma has also reported on the life of the Hungarian Operational Research Society in its Scientific Life column. Members of the Society also publish regularly in these journals. The international journal CEJOR has published several special issues related to HORS conferences.

HORS is associated with various foreign Operational Research Societies, such as the Austrian Operational Research Society, the German Operational Research Society, the Croatian Operational Research Society. In 1992, it also joined IFORS and EURO.

Prizes and Awards

HORS has three prizes, all awarded annually. The most prestigious one is the Egerváry Prize, since 2004. It is given to senior OR researchers in recognition of their lifelong achievements.
The second prize is the Tamás Rapcsák Prize, awarded to a researcher under the age of 45 who has made significant and independent contributions to the theory and practice of operations research, differential geometry, or decision support systems. The third prize is the Balas Egon Prize, which was first awarded in 2024. This prize is for junior OR researchers in recognition of specific scientific achievements, such as a published paper. For the Egerváry Prize, the HORS Board decides on the prize winner without nominations. For the other prizes colleagues apply, and the board of curators (Tamás Rapcsák prize) or the HORS Board (Balas Egon Prize) decides on the prize winner.

HORS and EURO

The Hungarian Operations Research Society supports EURO by actively participating in the program committees of EURO conferences, and by contributing in many EURO working groups. HORS organized a EURO conference in Budapest and many EURO WG conferences as well, like the last EUROPT conference in 2024. Furthermore, HORS is also an active member of IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies), further strengthening its international presence and collaborative efforts in operations research.
